Speech therapy

Clinical speech therapy in the phoniatric practice

A main area of work in clinical work is the treatment of organic and functional speech disorders. The symptoms manifest in three different areas, and problems can occur individually or combined.

}}Symptoms

  • Vocal sound changes (the voice sounds croaky, husky, hoarse or breathy etc.)
  • Discomfort in the throat and larynx area (desire to clear one's throat, sensation of dryness or pressure, stinging or burning etc.)
  • Restricted vocal power (the voice tires unusually quickly and/or needs a lot of time to recover)

Logopaedic voice therapy individually analyses or buoys the factors that cause medically diagnosed vocal problems and works out possibilities for change. These are continuously incorporated into everyday life.

Patients learn how the vocal and speech apparatus is built up, how it "functions" and how it can be kept efficient.

Voice therapy involves "fitness" exercises for the vocal and speech apparatus, whilst initiating and training behavioural changes on the other, which should make the whole communication process easier.

}}Speech therapy

  • Breathing
  • Articulation
  • Posture
  • Body tension

These areas are part of speech therapy.

Crucial to this is that the entire therapy work is geared to the individual person with their very individual difficulties.

Since speech therapy is in any case concerned with tension regulation, self-relaxation techniques, such as autogenic training, are often incorporated into the treatment.

Another area of work is the treatment of orofacial malfunctions. These can be manifested by swallowing difficulties, paraesthesia in the jaw area, problems with chewing, and a sensation of pressure in the ear region.

}}Osteovox

A new treatment that is suitable for all these disorders is "Ostéovox", a method that was developed in France and Belgium.

This method uses manual techniques from osteopathy to change and compensate for annoying malfunctions. The techniques help to deepen breathing, loosen chest, larynx and lower jaw, as well as normalise other areas of the breathing, vocal and speech apparatus.
